From KSAT to Delayed Theory Combination: Exploiting DPLL Outside the SAT Domain
نویسنده
چکیده
In the last two decades we have witnessed an impressive advance in the efficiency of propositional satisfiability techniques (SAT), which has brought large and previously-intractable problems at the reach of state-of-the-art SAT solvers. Most of this success is motivated by the impressive level of efficiency reached by current implementations of the DPLL procedure. Plain propositional logic, however, is not the only application domain for DPLL. In fact, DPLL has also been successfully used as a boolean-reasoning kernel for automated reasoning tools in much more expressive logics. In this talk I overview a 12-year experience on integrating DPLL with logic-specific decision procedures in various domains. In particular, I present and discuss three main achievements which have been obtained in this context: the DPLL-based procedures for modal and description logics, the lazy approach to Satisfiability Modulo Theories, and Delayed Theory Combination.

Solving Non-clausal Formulas with DPLL search
Great progress has been made on DPLL based SAT solvers operating on CNF encoded SAT theories. However, for most problems CNF is not a very natural representation. Typically these problems are more easily expressed using unrestricted propositional formulae and hence must be converted to CNF before modern SAT solvers can be applied. This conversion entails a considerable loss of information about...
متن کاملFrom Propositional Satisfiability to Satisfiability Modulo Theories
In this paper we present a review of SAT-based approaches for building scalable and efficient decision procedures for quantifier-free first-order logic formulas in one or more decidable theories, known as Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) problems. As applied to different system verification problems, SMT problems comprise of different theories including fragments of elementary theory of num...
متن کاملReduction rules and universal variables for first order tableaux and DPLL
Recent experimental results have shown that the strength of resolution, the propositional DPLL procedure, the KSAT procedure for description logics, or related tableau-like implementations such as DLP, is due to reduction rules which propagate constraints and prune the search space. Yet, for first order logic such reduction rules are only known for resolution. The lack of reduction rules for fi...
متن کاملSimplification: A General Constraint Propagation Technique for Propositional and Modal Tableaux
Tableau and sequent calculi are the basis for most popular interactive theorem provers for formal veriication. Yet, when it comes to automatic proof search, tableaux are often slower than Davis-Putnam, SAT procedures or other techniques. This is partly due to the absence of a bivalence principle (viz. the cut-rule) but there is another source of ineeciency: the lack of constraint propagation me...
متن کاملSplitting on Demand in SAT Modulo Theories
Lazy algorithms for Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) combine a generic DPLL-based SAT engine with a theory solver for the given theory T that can decide the T -consistency of conjunctions of ground literals. For many theories of interest, theory solvers need to reason by performing internal case splits. Here we argue that it is more convenient to delegate these case splits to the DPLL engin...
